Handa Island is formed from stratified Torridonian
sandstone and is one of the largest seabird colonies in North
Western Europe. Inhabited by man until 1847, this island is now
home to a vast array of seabirds such as great skuas (arctic and
great), razorbills, guillemots, kittiwakes and puffins.
The great stack is possibly the best place to see and hear this
huge colony on seabirds. Puffins are now returning to colonise
the stack after the eradication of brown rats in 1997.
